60,000 rainbow trout that are 12 inches or longer and 4,000 brown trout about 12 inches long will be stocked across Massachusetts this fall. Fall stocking season will begin around the last week of September and be completed by the second week of October depending on water temperatures.

The Environment Agency in England and Wales now requires all farmed brown trout stocked into rivers and some lakes to be infertile (triploid). These regulations were put in place in January 2015.
Brown trout are stocked to provide longer-term fishing opportunities since they are stocked at smaller sizes and expected to survive a number of years after stocking. Most anglers do not consider brown trout to be a harvestable size until they measure at least 12 inches.
