According to the Asian American Federation’s 2017 report Overcoming Challenges to Mental Health Services for Asian New Yorkers, Asian-American cent teens have the highest rates of depression among all racial/ethnic groups in the U.S., with Asian American women ages 15-24 having some of the highest rates of suicide across all racial groups.
A couple of other notes on Asian American protagonists before we start. One, this is a list about protagonists who are definitively Asian American, and can lift up that experience.
But for Asian American women, the model ity myth manifests itself in especially ugly forms that derive in part from our cultural fixation on Asian women as sexual objects.
I’m focusing on Asian Am writers here b/c that’s my wheelhouse, but if you can think of an Asian woman in the spotlight, odds are high that she’s been harassed or will be at some point. Support them where you can. Watch their shows, read their work, follow them. Cheer them on.
